Artist Review: How Golden Maple Elevated My Miniature Painting

At Golden Maple, we prefer to let painters speak for our brushes. In this review, miniature painter and YouTube creator Ole Brøgger shares his personal experience with our Kolinsky sable and Arrow-Head brushes, including more than a year of use with the Kolinsky sable brushes.

  • Author: Ole Brøgger (OleBrogger)
  • Disclosure: Golden Maple provided Ole with brushes for review. All opinions in this article are his own, based on his personal experience using the brushes.

A Lifetime with Miniatures: From Metal Figures to Modern Acrylics

Miniature painting has been part of my life for decades. I’m Ole Brøgger, a 51-year-old YouTube content creator focused on tabletop role-playing games, terrain building, and miniature craftsmanship. I DM for five friends in my real-life D&D campaign, review tools, and paint a lot of miniatures.

And I have one rule that guides everything:

“No unpainted miniatures on the table!”

For me, painting isn’t just a hobby—it’s part of the ritual, the immersion, and the storytelling.

I started painting at 11 years old, when figures were mostly metal and paints were oil-based, expensive, and smelly. After a long break, I returned to the hobby in 2016. By then, acrylic paints and affordable synthetic brushes were everywhere.

But cheap synthetic brushes came with a cost: they lost their point almost instantly. I went through dozens, thinking acrylic paint was the problem.

It wasn’t.

Synthetic vs. Natural Hair Brushes: Why Quality Matters

When I was a kid, I didn’t know the difference between synthetic and natural hair brushes. All my brushes back then were natural hair—and they lasted forever.

Coming back to the hobby, I realized something important: good miniature painting requires good brushes, and good brushes are expensive.

The Problem with Cheap Synthetic Brushes

My experience with inexpensive synthetic brushes was frustrating. They were cheap and easy to replace, but they lost their point quickly.

For miniature painting, that matters. A reliable point gives you the control needed for fine details, while a brush that constantly loses its shape makes you work against the tool.

That experience made me pay much closer attention to brush quality.

Why Kolinsky Sable Works for Miniature Painting

Natural hair brushes vary wildly in quality. The best hair for miniature painting comes from sable, especially Kolinsky sable. Kolinsky hair has unique properties:

  • Holds moisture extremely well
  • Snaps back to a perfect point
  • Maintains its shape under heavy use

A proper Kolinsky sable brush is a precision instrument. But it’s also expensive—often €25–€35, and the most expensive brush I own is €50 / $55 for a single brush.

Worth it, yes, but still a significant investment.

Golden Maple Enters the Story

In 2025, I received a message from Golden Maple asking if I wanted to try their brushes.
My honest first reaction:

“Chinese brushes? Cheap? Any good?”

I was skeptical. Very skeptical!

But when the brushes arrived and I tried them, everything changed.

Golden Maple’s Kolinsky sable brushes offered the kind of quality I had come to expect from my premium brushes, but at a much more accessible price. They were:

  • The same quality as my premium brushes
  • Affordable and accessible
  • Durable beyond expectation

This wasn’t just surprising—it was a turning point in my miniature painting.

More Than a Year Later: Four Brushes, 100+ Miniatures

More than a year later, I’m still using the same four brushes they sent me.

These brushes have painted 100+ miniatures, survived acrylics, washes, metallics, contrast paints, Speedpaints, and texture paints, and they still maintain their point perfectly.

Never shed a single hair!

Even premium natural hair brushes struggle with some of the harsher paint types used in miniature painting. But these? They just keep going.

The Arrow-Head Brushes: Precision Meets Versatility

The newest brushes I’ve tested are Golden Maple’s Kolinsky Sable Arrow-Head brushes—and they’re outstanding. I also made a short video review of them here.

They offer a razor-sharp point for fine detail work, a flat surface for broad coverage, and excellent paint capacity, while having the same durability as their round brushes.

This shape gives you flexibility that traditional round brushes simply can’t match.

For miniature painting, having both a precise point and a broader working surface makes the Arrow-Head shape particularly versatile.

What Long-Term Use Taught Me

Brush Care Matters — But Quality Matters More

I’ve always cleaned my brushes thoroughly after every session: water, brush soap, and proper drying. This is a habit from my oil-painting days.

Not cleaning your brush equals a dead brush—no exceptions.

But even with good maintenance, not all brushes survive heavy use. Golden Maple’s do.

Every set I’ve tried from them has held up incredibly well. In my experience, brush care matters, but the quality of the brush matters just as much.

What Stood Out

  • Sharp, Reliable Point: The brushes still maintain their point well through regular use.
  • Shape Retention: They maintain their shape well through regular use.
  • Durability: They have handled acrylics, washes, metallics, contrast paints, Speedpaints, and texture paints.
  • No Hair Shedding: They have never shed a single hair during more than a year of use.
  • Arrow-Head Versatility: The shape combines a precise point with a broader surface for coverage.
  • Good Value: They offer the quality I expect from premium brushes at a more accessible price.

Why Golden Maple Motivated Me to Paint More

Golden Maple didn’t just send me brushes—they changed how I paint.

The precision of each brush stroke and not having to do it over speeds up the painting process. Their brushes perform at a professional level without the professional price tag, and that’s why they earned my respect and motivated me to paint more.

Thank you, Golden Maple, for making miniature painting easier, better, and cheaper.
